Key Quote from "A Form of Sound Words" by Charles Spurgeon

Charles Surgeon: Form of Sound Words, p. 634-636 2 Timothy 1:13 “In the first place, every deviation from truth is a sin. It is not simply a sin for me to do a wrong act, but it is a sin for me to believe a wrong doctrine. Lately our ministers have absolved us all from obeying God in our judgments; they have told us point blank, (many of them, in their drawing-rooms, and some of them in the pulpit) that we shall never be asked in the day of judgment what we believed. We have been told that for our actions we shall be responsible, but for our faith we shall be irresponsible (or something very much like it). They have told us plainly, that the God who made us, although He has authority over our hands, our feet, our eyes, and our lips, hath but little authroity over our judgment; they have told us, that if we make ver such bluders in divinity, they are no sins, so long as we can live right lives! But is that true? No: the whole man is bound to serve God; and if God gives me a … [Read more...]

Is Monergism Really a Form of Synergism?

Is Monergism Really a Form of Synergism?: from John Hendrix at MonergismQuestion: I appreciate the monergistic model of salvation since it appears to give God all the credit for the salvation of man. Many synergists believe that the Holy Spirit, thru a temporary working within a man, illuminates man to the truth of the gospel, leads him to a point of repentance, and that God gives the gift of faith for him to believe; yet something in the lost man has to believe in the gospel in order to be saved. I am not sure what part is regenerated, the spirit of man? His will? In any event, regeneration does not save that man because he has yet to believe in Christ. The remaining part of that man, … [Read more...]

For a church to become a biblical community and make biblical disciples, the members need to cultivate an eternal prepsective and a right ... all » view of God's gracious actions. In this passage Jesus exhorts his disciples to endure, after rebuking and warning the pharisees about his second coming at the end of chapter 17. This explicitly sets the context of the passage on the second coming of Christ (not a secret rapture). The basic questions that is being asked is "Will God Find faith on earth when he comes again? Will the warnings of Jesus to remember Lot's wife, to keep the heart fixed on Christ, and to not love the world secure the faith of the disiciples? Will they endure to the end?" How can we endure to the end and don't become like Lot's wife - who was too much in love with this world to go all the way with Christ? Jesus tells His disciples not to loose heart but keep praying because God is ready to answer. Our problem with praying is that good things in life and normal … [Read more...]
