How my preaching of the Old Testament has changed

Oh how I can resonate with the following quote: When I first started preaching 14 years ago, most of my sermons showed a severe disregard for the Old Testament. And even when I crafted a message from one of those books, I was not trying to see the passage post-Easter. I handled the Old Testament as if Jesus hadn't come.Don't read the Old Testament pretending Jesus didn't happen. After Jesus died and rose from the dead, his disciples saw the ancient promises differently. Those promises were no longer suspended in mid-air but became yes in Jesus. The types had found their antitype, the arrows their target, the shadows their Light. NT Use of OT and Biblical Authority

Below is a helpful article by Michael  Vlach.  I would add another category that I would call "Single Meaning, Fuller application" and place this in between #1 and #2.  the reason for this is that I don't think that Michael captures the position that believes in a single meaning in the New Testament use of the old, but applies it to different or multiple referents.  One can see this position in the book Three View of the New Testament use of the Old Testament which is called Single Meaning, Multiple Referents by Darrell L, Bock .  This position holds that it is important to be faithful to use the Grammatical, Historical, Literal, Theological hermeneutic in interpreting any passage.  It is also important to understand the human authors meaning of the Old Testament, so that one can understand the New Testament's fulfillment.  I personally would agree that the New Testament is the best commentary on the Old Testament, because previous revelation must be understood in light of later … [Read more...]

3 Views of the New Testamenet use of the Old Testament

I am currently reading through "Three Views of the New Testament use of the Old Testament" and wanted to unpack some issues. First, this issue was one that Seminary did a poor job of preparing pastors for in their teaching ministry. Secondly, most Christians don't deal with the different perspective that the New Testament authors had in their use of Old Testament texts. It gets confusing to see a New Testament passage applying and expanding the meaning to new contexts and referents. I maintain that authorial intent of the text all the while believe that the meaning of Scripture is ultimately focuses on Christ and God's plan of redemption fully expounded in the New Testament. Here is a review of the book, which may get you more excited to read and struggle through the relationship between the New Testament and the Old Testament.
