Fight Spiritual Drifting

When my family and I go to the beach, we always need a site marker for where we lay our stuff down.  Why do we need this marker?  It is because when you go swimming in the ocean you will always drift with the currents.  This summer when we were snorkeling, I realized that I needed to get to shore because I did not feel great, but found myself with my boys quite a distance from where we had set our beach stuff down.

Drifting is a common occurrence in everyone’s life.  Companies drift from their founder’s vision, Denominations drift toward to more liberal views, churches drift from the biblical doctrines that they use to believe, and we personally drift from our convictions that we once held.  Spiritually, we tend to stray from making the Gospel central, eventually straying into idolatry (Hebrews 2:1).  Since we are worshipers by nature, our hearts always moving or drifting in society’s currents somewhere – either toward Christ and His Gospel or into the clutch of something or someone else, sometimes without even knowing it.  Spiritual drifting will cause our spiritual immune systems to shut down, making us vulnerable to innumerable spiritual diseases and sins.  Even outwardly, good people are very vulnerable to drifting because they tend to make a useful god of something or someone other than the true living God.

If you have any doubts about your constant need to fight against spiritual drifting and idolatry, consider your great need to obey these commands:hebrews-2-1

(1) “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it” (Hebrews 2:1).

(2) “Little children, keep yourselves from idols” (1 John 5:21).

(3) “Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession…” (Hebrews 3:1).

(4) “1… let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:1–2).

Fighting the current of spiritual drifting is a big deal and not just an option that you must do if you are in an especially spiritual state, in a crisis, at a camp, or in bible study to prepare some lesson. This is a word to all Christians: it is “[we] must pay closer attention” to Jesus as the Word of God, so we don’t spiritually drift through life.
