A New Respect for Power

One the issues we have had recently at our home is the gross algae growing on our deck and on the outside stairs leading to the basement.  This past weekend I endeavored to pressure wash the stairs with a pressure washer that I had borrowed pressure washer in my bare feet.  While clearing the stairs I accidently also ran the spray across my left foot which cut the top layer of the skin off my foot.  Believe me, I now have new respect for the power of pressure washers.

Respect for power is an important and in many ways.  Here is how respecting God’s power helps us.

First, respecting Jesus’s power helps us to be his devoted followers.  Jesus said his disciples, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Go therefore and make disciples of all nations …” (Matthew 28:18–19).  Jesus Power gives us courage to go out into the world and make followers of Jesus from other religions.  It is Jesus’ power that gives us the boldness and confidence in our witness.

Secondly, respecting Jesus divine power gives us the confidence of victory in our lives.  The apostle John says, “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4).  The truth is that God’s presence in our life is greater than any problem or temptation we are dealing with at this time.  Even Satan cannot defeat you as a believer in Christ. god-is-all-powerful

Finally, respecting Jesus’s power helps us to rightfully have the fear of the Lord which is the beginning of wisdom.  The Psalmist says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!” (Psalm 111:10).  In other words we are motivated to please God because of his power.  For the genuine Christian, we don’t need to be scared of God’s judgment, but we fear God by wanting so badly to please and not disappoint him.  We want to hear him say, “Well don’t my good and faithful servant,” as he did to the faithful steward in Matt. 25:21.

While I have a new respect for the power of a “power washer,” we all need to gain in our respect for God’s power demonstrated in Jesus Christ good work in our lives, in this world, and in the world to come.
