As many of you know Colin Kaepernick has created a firestorm of discussion as he sits through the playing of the National Anthem at the start of NFL football games. He says that he is protesting what he perceives injustice in America.
Now I do question his judgement but I can admire his courage. It disheartens me to see someone being fed misinformation about the condition of America and the violence between police and citizens recently, but I do believe that we all need to take a stand for what is just in our society no matter who we are.
While Kaepernick professes to be a Christian whose has a tattoo of Psalm 18:39, it doesn’t mean he understand God’s justice. Kaepernick explains that this verse is “…saying the Lord is giving me all the tools to be successful”, but I believe he is misinformed or deceived to what God’s standard of justice are.
I believe that justice of God is important to understand. 
First God’s justice is not individualistic. In other words, we don’t get to define what is just and unjust. God does that. It doesn’t matter if we feel something is right, what matters is that what God says about it. Paul wrote to Timothy that “Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness…” (2 Timothy 3:16).
Secondly, God’s justice causes God to be merciful. We know that the greatest mercy we can have is when God does not count our sins again us. We are all guilty of sin (Romans 3:23, 6:23a), and the only way we will not be punished by God is to be grated mercy by him. God is both just and merciful. This should humble us to act justly as Micah 6:8 tells us to be.
Finally, God justice causes God to vindicate Himself by paying the price of our sin for us. We don’t want God’s justice because if we received justice, we wouldn’t like it. In fact, we really want mercy and not justice because mercy shows that “He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.” (Psalm 103:10, ESV). The fact is that Jesus was punished unjustly was so we would receive mercy. His injustice brought us grace and mercy.
Are you grateful that God is just? It is one motivation that God sent his son to die for our sins.
