New Covenant Theology

Parable of the Two Trains – by Pastor Mark Webb

Parable of the Two Trains Several years ago, I posted links to a small series entitled The Parable of the Two Trains by Mark Webb, which was [and still is] the best analogy concerning the relationship between the old and new covenants I’d ever have come across. This modern-day parable will help you in your study of Scripture by explaining the big picture of the Biblical story, the differences between law and grace, as well as are some of the questions surrounding Covenant and Dispensational theology.   This parable is separated into 4 parts or 4 different posts so you can have good

New Covenant Theology Distinctives by Gary Long New Covenant Theology Distinctives by Gary Long, www.SoloChristo.com WHAT IS NCT AND WHAT ARE SOME OF ITS MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS? A. Presuppositions The Existence of God is a first truth, “for he who comes to God must believe that He is” (Heb. 11:6). The Scriptures are inspired, infallible, relevant, authoritative revelation from the triune God; therefore, the Bible as His written “word is truth” (John 17:17). The final revelation of God the Father is in the eternal Son of God (Heb. 1:2), Jesus Christ, who is the Word of God, full of grace and truth

Humm, is this diagram really stating what a person espousing that position would agree to or is it defining a position without respect to what the conversation is in that theological position? NCT, CT, DT_Diagram see also www.disciplemaking.net

Understanding the Big Picture Options of Eschatology and its relationship to Ecclesiology

This chart of mine is used to explain the overall landscape of the relationship Ecclesiology (doctrine of the church) to Eschatology (Doctrine of last things or end times).  Along the spectrum of Ecclesological position that people take today is Classical Covenant Theology (CCT) at one end and Classical Dispensational theology (CDT) at the other end (CCT————————–————-CDT), with several options in the middle (one of which is New Covenant Theology (what is what I currently hold at leas in one the various branches).  All sides would claim that they hold to a literal interpretation of the Bible.   To help one understand this a little better one needs to

A overriding purpose of grace

I believe that there are covenants that can be classified as a “covenant of grace“, but I cannot hold biblically to an actual covenant of Grace, since it is not revealed in scripture explicitly and clearly.  I am OK with using the description “covenant of grace” to denote God’s gracious purpose over all covenants as well.  God does have a “purpose of grace.” John Zens talks about this in:  Is There A “Covenant Of Grace?” see also www.disciplemaking.net

SermonAudio.com – New Covenant Theology

While I lead toward NCT of Dr. Thomas Schreiner, Don Carson, Fred Zaspel, and Tom Wells, it is also helpful to listen to a critique from a man I highly highly respect. SermonAudio.com – New Covenant Theology – Critique by Jim Renihan Maybe I am wrong, and need correcting in this issue, but I want to be Biblical in that I want God’s intended meaning of the scriptural revelation of Himself and not mine or someone else’s tradition, culturally conditioned experience or opinion about the facts becoming a greater authority that Scripture itself.   see also www.disciplemaking.net
