Gospel at the Center

Gospel at the Center: “ I would encourage you to meditate on the following explanation of what is means to be Gospel centered from the Elders and leaders of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach, California: The gospel is at the center of all we do. The “gospel” is the good news that through Jesus, the Messiah, the power of God’s kingdom has entered history to renew the whole world. Through the Savior God has established his reign. When we believe and rely on Jesus’ work and record (rather than ours) for our relationship to God, that kingdom power comes

What’s So New About the New Covenant?

I always love D.A. Carson’s perspective on the New Testamenet newness. He has shaped some of my thoughts about the New Covenant’s continunity and discontinuity. enjoy and read on. Justin Taylor affirms this in stating: What’s So New About the New Covenant?: “One of the key reasons that I am a credobaptist (i.e., only those with a credible profession of faith in Christ should be baptized) is due to the nature of the new covenant. A key difference between the old covenant and the new is horizontal. In the old covenant, the elect/redeemed/remnant/spiritually circumcised are a subset of the covenant

Complementarian Round Up

Complementarian Round Up: by Tim Etherington. Here are some good links for those of you struggling with the issue of Complementarian doctrines of the biblical role of manhood and womanhood. I believe that these links will be valuable to you. Let me know what you think. Tim relates the following:This has already made its rounds in the blogs but I thought I’d point it out here too. There was recently a large church planting gathering in Florida. Mark Driscoll decided not to fly from one side the continent the other in order to deliver a 20 minute talk, so he

Problems with Amillennialism

Problems with Amillennialism: by tim Etherington One of the most difficult issues of most Christians is to understand eschatology and all of the neuances of meaning that go along with the end times. I have no doubt that Christians will continue to debate (hopefully in an irenic way) these issue for the good and growth of the church. As I was reading some articles I stumbled upon this article that affirms Covenantal or Historic Premillennialism and states the problems (not in a stawman sort of way) with amillennialism. Read and enjoy and tell me what you think. Tim states:I kind

The Christian and the Law

The Christian and the Law: by Tim Etherington This is a great little post explaining a 50000 foot level view of the role of the law in the Christian life. Enjoy. Tim says:Recently I taught on Colossians 2:16-17 and we talked about the relationship between the Christian and the law. What I wanted to do was to point out that the issue of the Sabbath is important and is handled in different ways by Bible believing Christians. For me that opened the question of how we understand the relationship between the Christian and the Law. I decided to do some

3 Views of the New Testamenet use of the Old Testament

I am currently reading through “Three Views of the New Testament use of the Old Testament” and wanted to unpack some issues. First, this issue was one that Seminary did a poor job of preparing pastors for in their teaching ministry. Secondly, most Christians don’t deal with the different perspective that the New Testament authors had in their use of Old Testament texts. It gets confusing to see a New Testament passage applying and expanding the meaning to new contexts and referents. I maintain that authorial intent of the text all the while believe that the meaning of Scripture is

The Theology of Fulfillment

Here is a concise explanation of how the Old Testament and New Testament fit together.  The Old Testamenet had it hopes in God’s promises of a future day and king.  While the New Testament sees these hopes and promises realized.  I agree with Augustine’s saying, “The Old is in the New revealed; the New is in the Old concealed.”   Both the OT and NET have a Christological focus and a redemptive purpose. Fred G. Zaspel states this:  Some OT scholars have argued that we should read and study the OT on its own terms. That is, we should seek to understand it by itself without “reading back” into it from the
