Nine Step Guide to Studying Theology (or Any Issue)

I appreciate Michael Patton over at Parchment and Pen giving these beneficial steps to studying theology: Nine Step Guide to Studying Theology (or Any Issue): “1. Pray for an open mind and heart While people can intellectually understand truth without the Holy Spirit moving in their heart, no one can accept the truth without his influence (1Cor 2:14-15). The same goes for us as Christians. We may study and have all the information in the world—even the right information—but this does not mean that we are going to be capable of accepting the truth. In other words, the acquisition of

The Repentance Option

I am reading through “What is the Gospel? by Greg Gilbert.  Here is a quote on repentance and faith in regards to the Gospel. Jesus’ message to his listeners was, “Repent and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:15). If faith is turning to Jesus and relying on him for salvation, repentance is the flip side of that coin. It is turning away from sin, hating it, and resolving by God’s strength to forsake it, even as we turn to him in faith. So Peter told the on-looking crowd, “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped

Future Trends in Evangelicalism

Future Trends in Evangelicalism by Ed Stetzer August 02, 2010 |  By Ed Stetzer It’s hard to believe that we’re almost a decade into the new millennium. Ten years ago, churches were busy preparing for Y2K, communicating with a hot new tool known as “Instant Messaging,” and talking more and more aboutpostmodernism. Evangelicals and their churches that have been successful in the ten years since have been able to anticipate and recognize trends quickly, and subsequently find effective ways to communicate the gospel in a meaningful manner to the culture in which they live. For that to continue in the

The Exegetical Process: What Does it Mean to You?

The Question “What does it mean to me?” can be the most destructive question one can ask of the Scriptures in any contexts. Michael Patton from Parchment and Pen blog explains why it is very dangerous to subscribe to such a subjective approach to Bible study. Parchment and Pen The Exegetical Process: What Does it Mean to You? What does it mean to you? This, I believe, is the most destructive question that one can ask of the Scriptures. The implication is that the Scriptures can mean something to one person that it does not to another. “To me, it means that God is

Ronald Regan Quotes

‘The most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’ – Ronald Reagan ‘Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.’ – Ronald Reagan ‘The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.’ – Ronald Reagan see also www.disciplemaking.net

Thoughts on Biblical Interpretation

The New Covenant Journal posted what I believe to be helpful little article on some principles to help you interpret the Bible.   Which principle below is the most helpful for you in your study of Scripture?  How should one interpret Proverbs 22:6 specifically according to proper interpretative principles? Thoughts on Biblical Interpretation:  [The following is an outline of a class I recently taught dealing with how to study the Bible. It’s just a skeleton, but maybe it will provoke some thoughts for your contemplation.] I. Biblical balance and tension Principles and guidelines—1. We must remember that the Bible was

AlbertMohler.com – Hard to Believe? Biblical Authority and Evangelical Feminism

As a fellow complementarian with regard to Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, I always appreciate Dr. Mohler’s gentle but firm way he deals with egalitarians who are amazed that people can still be committed to a biblical doctrine concerning the roles of man and women in the church and home.  This dialog that he recounts is helpful in understanding how others may incorrectly see the complementarian position and help those of us who hold to the biblical roles to better communicate these to unbelievers and egalitarian believers. While I don’t think that this issue in itself is one of salvation, it may indicated the denial of other more
