Southern Baptists and Evangelicals Together

A while back Trevin Wax  (Jun 14, 2010)  wrote a good article on his blog (Kingdom People) that sheds light on the enigma call the Southern Baptist Convention (of which I am in cooperation with).  Use this post to understand some of the particulars of a diverse (and sometimes not unified) people who call themselves Southern Baptist (a name that I think should be changed because this is a national/international convention now not just a southern one).   Southern Baptists and Evangelicals Together: “ This week, my wife and I are in Orlando for the Southern Baptist Convention. I’m looking forward to joining other Southern Baptist authors

Christian Scholarship in a Nutshell

Here is a great blog by Michael Patton at Parchment and Pen on how scholarship works with Bible Study.  It seems that for many of us we don’t spend enough time with the Bible (and that should be our main focus as believers), but we all participate and must participate in all three areas or types of Christian Scholarship even if we do not realize it.  As Christians we should check our brains at the door of our closet or church, but use our intelect under the control and power of the Spirit to understand God, His Word, and His world better. How Does John Piper Prepare a Sermon?

How do you prepare a talk, Bible study, sermon, or speech? I am big on preaching extemporaneous, and I while I think their are other ways to go about preaching, I think that extemporaneous is best for most of us preachers and speakers.  I don’t deny that there are different ways to preach extemporaneously.  One of my problems is that I am so tied to know the many options onmy subject that I never quit studying in time to digest my own work. Let me state that one can preach extemporaneously with some notes or better with certain types of notes (thought it probably

#9: What does it mean to “accept Jesus”?

Here is a great description of Real biblical salvation: #9: What does it mean to “accept Jesus”?: ” by Ray Ortland “You turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.” 1 Thessalonians 1:9 You and I are not integrated, unified, whole persons. Our hearts are multi-divided. There is a board room in every heart. Big table. Leather chairs. Coffee. Bottled water. Whiteboard. A committee sits around the table. There is the social self, the private self, the work self, the sexual self, the recreational self, the religious self, and others. The committee is arguing and debating

7 Types of Southern Baptists

I appreciate people who help us understand the diversity of associations (like the Southern Baptist Convention), while looking at also what unites us.  Unity is not uniformity or unanimity.  Unity is not tying 9 cats tales together and letting them go.  Unity is formed by common roots and common core beliefs.   it centers around a unified purpose in the Gospel of Christ.  We don’t have to be the same to associate together, but we do have to have some things in common.  That is why the Gospel and the Great Commission is the unifying factor in what we all do.  Diversity will

Engaging the topic of "Desert-Island Exegesis" by Phil Johnson

My Introductory Thoughts to This Topic Let me say up front that people need to read their bibles above everything else that they read. This humble and biblical attitude is exemplified in Pastor D. L Moody statement: “Either this book [the Bible] will keep me from sin or sin will keep me from this book [the bible].”  The proper prioritization of the importance of Scripture in our lives is also exemplified in a conversation that D. L Moody had with a business man on a train, who asked him how he knew so much about the bible.  He stated that: “If you read your magizines more
