Atonement Quiz
Adrian Warnock posted a quiz on the atonement that I wanted to post here. He says: The quiz is meant to be answered from the perspective of what John Stott says in his book The Cross of Christ. It can also be used to helpfully clarify your own position. It’s a simple true/false answer for each question. Why not jot down your answers and then see how they compare to John Stott? You may remember that earlier in the series I shared a quote from Stott with which many today would feel uncomfortable. How much do you agree with Stott?
Anonement – Sufficient and Effecitve
I appreciate Adrian Warkock’s understanding of the Antonment. He show a bery balanced view and how at the same time the atonement is applied in some way to everyone as well as specifically to only those that believe. His says …we can surely agree that Jesus’ death was enough for the whole world, but will not be permanently applied to the whole world—so while unrepentant sinners do benefit temporarily from the death of Jesus, they will not benefit forever. It is only those who are united with Jesus that will ultimately benefit. Thus, to me the Scripture teaches that there
The Bleeding of the Evangelical Church
Here David wells His the nail on the head in describing the issues in Evangelicalism today and pastors must come to grips with how to get back to the real gospel: But in adapting itself to this culture, the Church, far more than was the case twenty-five years ago, is having its character, and its purposes, and the way it functions, defined for it. There’s nothing wrong with commerce per se, but I am going to argue that there is something profoundly wrong in trading Christ, or in thinking that religion is the commerce of the soul. Now this adaptation
Two Truths are Needed
Here is a great quote by the pyromaniacs and Phil Johnson. I believe that the two great doctrines of human responsibility and divine sovereignty have both been brought out the more prominently in the Christian Church by the fact that there is a class of strong-minded, hard-headed men who magnify sovereignty at the expense of responsibility; and another earnest and useful class who uphold and maintain human responsibility oftentimes at the expense of divine sovereignty…Scripture teaches both that the work of salvation rests upon the will of God, and not upon the will of man; and (secondly, the equally sure
Today’s Main Theological Dangers
Mark Dever Gives a great summery of the Theological Dangers facing the church. He states: The main theological dangers I see confronting us today are a practical rejection of the authority of God’s word even by those who theoretically submit to it; a rejection of the sovereignty of God in favor of the putative sovereignty of man; a caricature, misunderstanding, or rejection of the penal substitution of Christ for sinners; a shallow understanding of conversion as a mere shift of opinions; a worldliness in our evangelism which deceives people about the very nature of the gospel we are hoping to
Does the New Covenant break in any way with the Old Covenant
For a while I have been investigating the issue of covenant theology and other systems of theology that deal with the overarching theme(s) of scripture. More and more I see that all scripture points to christ and the Gospel of God’s glory is the overarching purpose of scripture. I think there is more fruitful dialogue going on about these issues that as been going on in a long time. Richard Barcellos in Defence fo the Decalogue, has summarized the way the New Covent differes from the Old in the following list: First, unlike the Old Covenant, the New Covenant cannot
